Historic San Jose Day Nursery Set For Complete Makeover

Landmark downtown structure to undergo restoration, remodeling

SAN JOSE, CA - TBI Construction & Construction Management, Inc. is the general contractor on an extensive remodeling project that will restore and expand the functionality of a classic Spanish-style building designed and built as a new home for the San Jose Day Nursery in 1936. The $2.2 million project is slated for completion in Spring 2006.

The N. Eighth Street building, which has served the daycare and child education needs of thousands of San Jose families for nearly 70 years, no longer met the Nursery’s high standards for providing much-needed child care services to the community. While the original structure is known for its quality construction, the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and food service functions of the facility had become antiquated beyond economical repair.

Following value engineering and constructability reviews by TBI, a plan was formulated for a complete revitalization and renovation of the main building, including demolition and refurbishment of interior spaces and support systems. Tectonics Architects, Engineers & Planners of San Francisco is chief architect for the project.

TBI was chosen for the project in part because of the company’s unique expertise in restoration and modernization of historic structures built using construction techniques that are seldom seen today. Project Manager Mark Bridley and Superintendent Ken Remmer, who between them have a total of more than 60 years combined experience, bring extensive knowledge to the project in terms of how to apply today’s construction methods and technologies to older, wood-framed buildings.

In addition to structural, plumbing, heating, and electrical system upgrades, the project includes a new, upgraded kitchen that will serve approximately 250 meals a day. Interior walls are being reconfigured in order to accommodate maximum teacher-student ratio in a nurturing environment.

“This important upgrade of our facilities is going to help us serve a substantially larger number of children in the downtown San Jose area, where families have relied on San Jose Day Nursery since its founding in 1916,” stated Martin Miegel, Owner’s Representative for the Nursery.

Founded in 1983, San Jose-based TBI Construction & Construction Management, Inc. has completed more than $900 million in projects throughout the Bay Area. In addition to Multiple Prime Construction Management for public and private owners, the company specializes in high-quality interior improvements and corporate headquarters, historical restoration and renovation, schools, religious institutions and new buildings.
