SAN JOSE – Anthony (Tony) P. Mirenda, a civil engineer and vice president of San Jose-based Toeniskoetter & Breeding Inc. (TBI) Construction, has been promoted to president of the company. Mirenda, 42, joined TBI Construction in 1987. He has supervised construction of numerous landmark buildings in the Santa Clara Valley and is an acknowledged expert on historical restorations, seismic retrofitting and construction management for the public sector. He is also the third generation of his family to construct buildings in the valley and the fifth principal of TBI to have come from the former Carl N. Swenson Construction Company of San Jose. “Tony Mirenda’s father, Phil, was my mentor at Swenson, and I am pleased to have had the opportunity to mentor Tony at TBI,” CEO Charles J. Toeniskoetter said. “Tony’s known all his life he was going to be a builder, and we’ve been able to follow his progress since he worked summers for us at the Swenson Company when he was still a student. Since joining us 15 years ago, he’s managed many of our most prominent and challenging projects, and we take enormous pride in his becoming president of TBI Construction.” Toeniskoetter will serve as CEO of TBI Construction as well as CEO of Toeniskoetter & Breeding, Inc. Development. Mirenda is currently managing construction of the $19 million Horace Mann Elementary School in downtown San Jose and $36 million of construction modernization of 16 elementary schools for the Santa Clara Unified School District. He has also been heading projects at Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, St. Francis High School in Mountain View, and Hoover School in San Jose, and he is in charge of seismic strengthening of several churches and schools for the Diocese of San Jose. Other recent projects include interiors for Agilent Technologies World Headquarters, renewal of Hewlett Packard World Headquarters and the new office building at 2400 Hanover St., all in Palo Alto; St. Francis of Assisi Church in San Jose; and the San Jose State University College of Business. Mirenda grew up in Mountain View, worked as a journeyman carpenter and earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Santa Clara University in 1982. He was a project manager for Carl N. Swenson and vice president and general manager of construction for K.D.C. Ltd., a Palo Alto development company, before joining TBI. He and his wife, Jennifer, live in the Hayward hills with their two children. Professional affiliations and community involvement include: • Member of American Society of Civil Engineers Mirenda’s late grandfather, Antonio Mirenda, emigrated from Sicily and worked 20 years as a master carpenter at Swenson. His father, Philip S. Mirenda, worked 35 years for the same company, as carpenter, foreman, general superintendent and ultimately executive vice president. On some historical restoration projects Tony Mirenda has found work done by his grandfather, and he recently served as project manager on a building at St. Francis High School that replaced a building where his father had served as project superintendent.
